Finally, submitted!

So here it is.

The result after nearly 8-9 months.

When seeing it binded, instant thought of "ohhh cant believe i actually did all that...oh no i don't want to go that phase again..ever!" easily appearred. haha

Some recap/note to self throughtout the whole process:

Before Proposal Stage - The difficult part was to find the topic! and formulating the research questions. The research qs kept on changing until the final draft version.

During Write Ups - The difficult part was actually on Chapter 3. I took nearly 2-3 months just doing that. Im doing purely qualitative research, and my knowledge on such instruments was 0%.Hence, the time taken.

The Longest Time I Spent - Chapter 4! Penat and at one point felt like giving up! Plus, it was during puasa time..zzzzzz

The Part that I like - NONE! haha even the buckram binding part sebab kopak duit ku

Last but not least, million thanks to my supervisor for her keen supervision, great support, valueable advices etc. To Jazmi, for all the exchanging notions, intellectual insights and such. and friends and family for being supportive and helpful. This is one hell of tiring processssss..

andd i love all ya''lll!!!

FInal Draft 2nd Version Submitted(hopefully it is the super final version)

Just submitted!
According to my supervisor, after I submit that, I can consider that as a final version without any improvement.
Phew!

Apart from the content, the task that left are:
1. reference list
2. list of figures
3. double check the in text citations
4. appendices
5. prepare the soft copy of findings & final draft

Hope I can complete that just within one week.
Then, before waiting for final words from my SV, I have to edit the conference paper!
Thank god my paper had been accepted in international conference. It's Global Learn Asia Pasific 2011 which will be held in Melbourne next year (March 23 - April 1).

My first attempt submitting paper to conferences and it was accepted and it is international. Syukur alhamdullilah.
but still, need lots of preparation on that; finalizing the paper, prepare the presentations & brush up my communication skills.
Ok now i can feel the nerves

Updates

I guess I am a bit off schedule due to last month's slow progression.
I decided to make a new timeline upon that.
Here is my new one and hopefully I can make it

List of 2011 International Conferences

I am wishing to get my paper published in international conference somewhere around next year.

So, by this few months ahead before the end of the year, I have to actually submit my abstract or full paper to which conferences I'm interested into.

Wish me luck people!

Writing a Good Abstract

Abstract is important to be clearly written because it would determine whether your paper is qualitfied to be published in conferences or articles.
Abstract is like the first impression. Of course we want people to see us to be very convincing and interesting when submitting the "Calling for Paper" submission.

So here is quite a useful guidance on How to Write A Good Thesis. What should be included, what is shouldn't etc.

Facebook Group MDP 7415_Project as Self Regulate Learning

Self-Regulate Learning according to scholars is:
Refer to ability of learner to :
  1. Prepare for his/her own learning
  2. Take necessary steps to learn
  3. Manage and evaluate the learning
  4. Provide self-feedback and judgment
  5. simultaneously maintaining a high-level of motivation
In my progression of doing my research, I came out of a conclusion that my Facebook Group for post graduate students as a space to share knowledge about doing thesis is no longer as a collaborative approach(as mentioned in my proposal) but it is more suitable for Self-regulated Learning approach.

I need to change that in my Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 later on.

Week 7

The whole week I've been busy with other thing. :P
What I have done:
1. Attending English Writing Workshop and documented it. Posted on Facebook.

That's all I did.
Quite behind schedule because I have hard time confirming and structuring my methods.

I guess I'm done documenting my focus group for almost 8 weeks.
Next, analyzing my data.
That's the longest part.

Week 6

What I had done:
1. Completed Literature Review(send draft to supervisor)
2. Already comfirmed methods, framework in Chapter 3

Type of Research Design

I am very clear about the direction of my research.
When I am about to write Chapter 3 where it requires me to explain what, why and how my research design will be, I am a bit blurred.

My research is more about exploring & investigating.
At last, I guess my research design would be Ethnography Research.

Most Useful Facebook's Features (up to this observation)

Current observation and short analysis:
  1. In my observation at this point, it gave me clue that the useful features of Facebook that could enhance student engagement in learning is the Group, Wall, Video & Tagging.

I might consider to provide more video format learning content to assist collaborating learning in Facebook Group.

So far, students gave positive feedback towards it.

Having videos of instructor delivery learning content & instructions, making announcement really help create the social presence of an instructor in the learning environment.

In learning environment, expert/instructor views in knowledge construction is important as to ensure the quality and strength of the newly constructed knowledge.

So, the newly constructed knowledge is somehow trusted by others because it comes from the experts of the course.

Week 4

What I had done:
1. Uploaded videos on Facebook
2. Continue monitoring student's participations on Facebook Group.
3. Continue doing research on which model to use as content analysis.

There are lots of model for content analysis. I have hard times to pick the most suitable one that well-suited my research purpose.

I discovered several of them and might considering to use more than one model in order to get my data analyzed with realibity and validity.

Framework of Evaluating Online Collaborative Learning Interaction

Analyzing collaborative learning through:
1. Group interaction
2. Group scaffolding

High level of collaborative learning is depends on these indicators:
1. Task performance (learning outcome)
2. Group functioning (participation/interaction behaviour)
3. Social support (task/process scaffolding)
4. Help service (task/process scaffolding)

Indicators that model task performance:

SKILSS:
1. Basic active learning skills
2. Supporting active learning skills
3. Information processing (perception) skills

Indicators that model group functioning:

SKILLS:
1. Active participation behavior and peer involvement skills
2. Social grounded skills
3. Task processing skills
4. Workspace processing skills
5. Communication processing skills

Those indicators would suggest the level/quality of collaborative tasks performed by students

Week 3

What I had done:
1. Consult my complete literature review with my supervisor. There is some amendments to be made.
2. Recording supervisor's video(reminder, advises, teach how to do literature review)and soon to be posted on Facebook Group.

Henri (1992) Model

Henri (1992) Model is a content analysis of computer-mediated communication.
Any electronic transcript can be analyzed using Henri (1992) Model such as online discussions, edublog, wiki, youtube, just to name a few.

There are 5 variables of Henri Model in analyzing the content of computer-mediated communication which are:

1. Student Participation Rates
2. Electronic Interaction Patterns
3. Social Cues within Student Messages
4. Cognitive and Metacognitive Components of Student Messages
5. Depth of Processing (surface/deep) within Message Postings

So, I will be using Henri Model to analyze the Facebook Group activity in my focus group based on the variables above.

This would help suggest the level of engagement of students using Facebook for educational purposes.

Method of Research Instrument

At first I thought it will be an observation.
But now it is more to content analysis where I need to analysis the online activity on Facebook.
Need to refer to Henri (1992) model.

Current progression status:
1. Literature Review DONE as first draft. Hopefully no major changes to be made.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Week 3

What I had done:
1. Done with LR 2.3, 2.5, 2.9(refer Lit. Review Content Outline)
2. Continue documenting Facebook activity

P/s:Nothing much I can do because currently I am down with fever.Gahhh
Hopefully I can get well soon and continue doing my work.

Content Outline for Literature Review

Chapter 1_INTRODUCTION

Week 2

What I had done:
  1. Structuring content outline for Literature Review
  2. Start the edublog
  3. Done with 2.10-draft

Week 1

What I had done:
  1. Setting up the Facebook group as my focus group approach
  2. Refer engagement models, collaborative learning models and guidelines to be applied in the focus group
  3. First face-to-face discussions with other peers under Ms Nazirah's supervisions
  4. Start collecting data by doing offline observations of the Facebook group

Timeline of the project paper

Hopefully I can work within my targeted timeline.
Even better if I can speed up! :)
